When people were saying they had a whale to feed the villagers, I didn't realize there would be a choice. I'm a firm believer in saving the whales and gained goody points instead but I'm not sure what I would have done if the villagers were still only foraging and the tree was empty!
Have others made the same choice I did? Actually, I had to make the decision twice, fairly early in the game. In the first game, the whale never appeared.

I always save the whale. First, whale-meat is greasy. Second, I'd rather that the alternative.

I have only come across the Whale once and I went for the save it solution. My inhabitants died out quite quickly after that. I would still do the same next time.

It's a computer game.
I play Grand Theft Auto. I jack cars, rob shops, burgle houses, mug pedestrians and speed, crash and burn.
In Half Life 2 I saved City 17 from the oppressive rule of the mysterious 'benefactors' who had enslaved the human race, and killed many people on my way to doing so.
And in Sim City I unleashed the power of an evil giant robot on my city and wiped out many lives and caused terrible hardship to the city.
But in real life I'm a Tax Accountant. Go figure.
So when the whale beaches up, and my village food store is looking a little low, I cut that baby up and feed it to them.

I saved the while myself too. At least it does boost you to the next spiritual level, therefore it does pay you in some tech points to do that as well.
Buttoneer... I was curious. When you did eat the while, did it boost you to the next farming level?

I was wondering if anyone was gonna say that, lol. It's just a gae, not real life. In real life, yeah i'd save the whale. Keep in mind I also have an infinite number of food sources in real life. In the game, if you havent started farming, eating a whale might not be a bad idea

I'm afraid it did nothing for the overall tech development of my village. Your point is absolutely right of course. You DO get extra spirituality for saving the whale but you get loads of food for cutting it up. The choice I make is governed by what my village needs at the time and not by real-life sentimentality.
Now 'Black & White' or 'Fable', both games which effectively reflect your personality as you make choices I think more carefully about and I would most probably 'save the whale' in those circumstances. But this game is a fight for survival and you do what you need to do rather than what you'd 'like' to do.
IMHO, of course

I saved the whale too. Basically your choice is between more food or a huge tech point bonus (because tech points that would have gone towards that extra spirituality level can now be applied to something else). The tech points were worth more to me, so I (er, they) pushed the whale back.
And uh, welcome, DeLorean

I'm not sure that's right Theo is it?
You get the spirituality upgrade automatically - as part of the event text it tells you that you have it, but I'd not noticed a boost in tech points as well.
Or does the boost only happen if you ahve already upgraded to spirituality 1?

When does this whale attempt t commit suicide anyway? I've nearly dawned on my 4th generation here, cleared the beach, built the hut, opened up the lagoon, restored the garden, and upgraded everything to lvl 2.

The whale incident is one of the Island Events. Since Island Events occur pretty much randomly and there are so many of them, you will never see all of them in a typical game. Buttoneer, I think Theo's point was that getting the "free" tech upgrade was equivalent to getting a tech point bonus, since you don't have to spend all of those points on the next level of Spirituality. That can be significant, depending upon when the event happens.

I've played 12-20 games so far and haven't seen a whale. You don't need it.

I saved the whale, but now I wish I'd eaten it! After saving it and becoming more enlightened, a group of kids landed on the island, and I've been struggling to feed them ever since.

You get the tech points that you would have spent on spirituality, to spend on something else. So to me, that's a tech point bonus.
EDIT: Oops, sorry Barbara, I posted before I read what you'd said.

Thanks for responding. I really did wonder what happened if you chose to eat it. I understand exactly what you're saying about it.
And I don't even know why I said "While" instead of "whale". I did try to edit it, but it didn't take. I may have to check out those other games you mentioned. They sound kina neat.

Ya you are correct , rescuing the whale brings you a level ahead in spirituallity. To me that brings the fun out of the game when the pop-ups give you tech levels.

I saved the whale and a few hours later lost all my food to the typhoon. Glad I didn't go for whale meat!

I haven't encountered the whale yet, but in the game...or in real life, I'd opt to eat the whale.
But in real life I'm a Republican. Go figure.

At least when youve reached level 3 in spirituality you don't have to choose... do you?
