Note, the following instructions relate only to the Palm version. The Pocket PC version has a separate savegame file that can be manually moved around.
1) Go to preferences and "pause" the game
2) Use a utility such as "Backup Buddy"or "Backup Man" (make sure to check the setting for "save unsaved preferences" so that this is enabled) and backup the device completely. BZBackup (Botzum Backup)has also been suggested in these forums.
3) Restore all the above data to your new device (which of course means doing a full restore to the new device).
4) Unpause the game

Carla,
Is there a way to save a game file so that you can restore to it later? I've looked but can't find the data file that has the game info in it.

On non-english devices, check in the Windows folder on your device. That is the last-resort where the program will create one if it has trouble creating one elsewhere. Otherwise it should be in Program Files->Fish Tycoon on the device.
The file is called: FishSaveGame.pts

I could not do that from T3 to T5. Due to no backup software works on T5 as yet. What I did is copy/beam Fish Tycoon and "Unsave Preferences" from T3 to T5. This still not working.

Do you have others suggestion ??

Those two programs, as well as several others, are available from Handango (or your favorite Palm application site). They come in a range of prices and features.

Do they only apply to backing up games or are they applicable to other programs as well?
Anyone know?

I used BackupBuddy for years to completely back up my Palm device to my PC. It saves everything, including application data. When I was a new Palm user, I didn't realize that HotSync was very limited in what it saved. I learned the hard way that you need another backup program to prevent disaster.

They are good file browsers and all around utilities to have.
They aren't just a 'save game saver'.

But are there any plans to implament a fishtycsavegame.pdb file or the like for future updates? Or at least, are there any freeware backup utilities that do the job, perhaps InnerBackup (sorry folks, but this one only seems to be at palmgear.com-hey, not my fault)? Thanks. -spaceman

LDW has started creating a separate savegame file for all of their new releases, but it's my guess that LDW is not in a hurry to implement that change in their existing games.

As long as we're on the topic of game saves and save portability...it would be nice if they were to use the same file format and name on the Pocket PC version and the future Windows version so that you can port your fishies back and forth. You know: work at your home PC while watching them, then pop them back onto your Pocket PC when you know you're going out to some BORING meeting and instead of taking notes (which is what people will THINK you are doing), you'll be managing the fishies!

That would require that the Windows and PPC versions be identical, and they're not. There are more "thingies" in the Windows version, which have to be stored in the savegame file. Take a look at the Windows version screenshots and notice all of the new tank ornaments, the seahorse, the snail - you get the idea!

I can dream, can't I?
Well as long as they're making an improved product, I guess that's worth missing out on portability. I look forward to the Windows product. Will be a nice companion to Excel and Word.

Which version did you buy, and where did you purchase it?
