OK, so my game was complete, but I let my village run on for a while. I unchecked breeding on everyone to keep the birthrate down and evntually the population leveled in the low 30's. Not too crowded, nice.
Then one day, I turned the thing on and suddenly had population 65! Three women nursing (the usual three, who go indoors now and then whether I tell them to or not); and 30 (thirty!) two-year olds! Where did all these little ones come from???

Looks like your villagers were bored and "found something" to do!

The villagers will do things that you didn't tell them to do regardless of what skill you have checked. They just "tend" to stick with the skill that is checked!

Wow, and I thought the plagues of Egypt were scary!

Yeah, I've seen that, especially if they have had some, er, practice. However, not counting males and the underage, I only had 9 females who could be, um, responsible, so howcome 30 two-years olds? Did I miss a barrel-o-babes event, or perhaps several of them?

Brett, did you check the ages of the toddlers again after you had closed the game by tapping the home button? I also found an impossible number of two-year-olds once, but after closing and restarting the game, some of them appeared to be older. They were all born overnight, but not at the same time. I suppose that the ages were only updated at the moment I closed the game... You could verify this by checking if there are still 30 peeps of the same age in your village
