I agree; keeping the kids penned up would spoil the game for me, too. It should also be remembered that the children provide hints on solving some of the puzzles by watching their actions. While we may not need them after having played through the game a few times, they are very useful to new players. And remember - we'll all be new players of VV3! \:D
