Yes, they are passed on to the children!! When the child turns 2, you will see the trait that was passed onto them in the detail screen! They will get the trait from only one parent though, so if you definately want a child to have healing skills, breed with two doctors!

I have two Master Researchers who had a male child born with Research skill. It displayed a significant amount in the child's Details at age two.
