I was about to get started on Puzzle #12 and then I got a "Fatal Error" on my screen. The only choice I had was "reset". So I chose reset and I can't get back into the game anymore. It won't even let me load up "Village Sim". I get the "loading" bar and then before it gets half way, my Palm freezes.

I was so close! What do I do now? The game won't even load for me to start a new game.

Here is a reply from Ladycfii that may solve your problem...
"there is a fix available for the bug that locks up your device when you start a new game. You can download it at www.ldwsoftware.com/VillageSimFixed.zip

If that doesn't fix your problem, please let us know. "

I had that problem once before too. My palm restarted itself and when I loaded the game again I had lost a dozen people to death, but besides that everything else was fine.

Did you hotsync before you crashed? If you did you could go into C:\Program Files\Palm\Gemelle\Backup\

Drag out VillageSavegame.PDB and quick install it to your palm. It should bring back the game as of the last time you saved it. I had to do that once when my Golden Child vanished into thin air not long after the fatal error. XD

I could have dragged out the villagesavegame.pdb?? Darn! I haven't backed up my village for a while. That's alright, I don't mind starting over. But I will know to back up my saved games on my PC.

Gemelle, I think your problem is different from the one that the fix version is intended to solve. It sounds like your savegame file became corrupted during the crash. There are two options available to you. The first option will perhaps let you recover your game in progress. Go into your \Program Files\Palm\username\backup and double-click the file VillageSavegame.pdb. Then HotSync your Palm and the backup savegame will be installed on your device. The other option will get you back up and running, but you'll have to start a new game: you can delete your savegame file from your Palm, or you can completely uninstall Village Sim using the Palm OS delete function, and then reinstall it. That will take care of the corrupted savegame file.

Please PM me if you have trouble with any of this, and I'll help you some more.

Very interesting. It worked, I got my Village Sim back! But all my villagers are gone and the food is at 50,331,648. Now I KNOW my villagers didn't work THAT hard at fishing!

Should I try the game again? Or should I wait until Arthur sends me the beta version? I don't want it crashing again ...

I might be too late now, but there was one little detail that I left off of my advice. Since your game wasn't paused when you last HotSynced, when you loaded it again a bunch of time had passed (from the game's point of view). Take a look at the date/time stamp on that savegame file on your PC and set your Palm clock to match. Then, load the game, launch it, pause the game, then put your Palm clock back to the correct date/time. All will be well.

If I'm too late, the knowledge will always help you if there's ever a next time!

I guess I should have seen this coming on my Palm. The game was running a lot slower with 50 villagers. I'm wondering if this is a Tungsten|E issue? Does anyone else have a slower running game when they have more villagers?

I started noticing the gameplay get slower around 20 villagers.

Even on my T5, which is a very fast Palm, the villagers begin to slow down as I approach the max population.

My Palm was also slow in response when I tried to click on "Continue Game". Should that be the case as well?

Also, before I Hotsync my game, should I always put it on pause first?

It's not a bad idea to get into the habit of pausing the game before you HotSync. That way you can safely load your savegame anytime you need it.

The reason that it was slow when you clicked on "Continue" was that it had a LOT of work to do catching up on all that elapsed time. That's normal (and also an indication that the game thinks it's been a long time since you last checked on it).

Really? I generally get that when it's only been an hour. However it does get worse when I go to sleep for the night and pick the game back up in 6 hours or so.

So does this mean I can't sleep anymore???

Yep, no sleep allowed! No, really, the game will always take a certain amount of time to update, but the longer you've been away, the longer the update takes!

Ah! No sleep! Noo! hehe. Well actually when I first started playing the game, I would secretly wake up in the middle of the night and update my village. This game is so addicting!

That sure looks like a corrupt savegame file to me. FWIW, I have gotten into the habit, at least once a day, or whenever a significant event occurs, of going through the following:
1. Put the game on "Pause". This prevents Time-warp.
2. Do a hot-sync. This puts your savegame file, VillageSavegame.pdb into a folder like C:\Program Files\palmOne\(your hot-sync name)\Backup
3. Move the savegame file, VillageSavegame.pdb to another folder.
4. Rename the savegame file. I just add a number after "VillageSavegame" so I have VillageSavegame0.pdb, VillageSavegame1.pdb and so on.
5. Continue your game by taking it off "Pause"

Now, if you want to return to any point in the past, you can just rename one of your archived savegames back to VillageSavegame.pdb, and double click on it. Now when you do a Hot Sync, it will restore your game to the state it was in when you made that particular savegame file.

It is handy to keep notes about what the state of the game was for each savegame file.

Sorry, this is too late to help Gemelle but maybe it will help someone in the future.

I have learned (painfully) that the Palm platform (and the iPAQ, and the Zaurus, etc., etc....) are inherently prone to messing up your files just when it is least convenient

That's been my experience, too, Walt! I'd like to add that if you change versions of Village Sim, such as installing a fix, you might not be able to use all of those savegame files that you backed up. So, if any of those games are important to you, they should be restored to the version of the game that produced them.

Hi Ladycfii! I was playing the "fix" version and now I'm running into problems with my registration key not holding. So I'm going into beta testing mode now. Hopefully that will help my Tungsten|E.

But a light of hope. I finished 3 puzzles in less than 9 real time hours on my 2nd attempt.

Gemelle's problem was due to crashes and incompatible savegame files. It's not something that most people will run into.

Yup. I had several crashes (or I got impatient while the game was loading and I resetted my Palm). I think after doing that 10 or more times, my game finally called it quits on me.
