I read in VV1 forum that an anti-virus might block it. Does anyone know the name of the application that is responsible for the statistics? My Anti-V lists a lot of odd-named applications so I wouldn't know which.

There are many reasons that you could get that message, including the possibility that the stats server may be down. You can read a full explanation in this answer in our Support FAQ.

It's not the anti-virus program, but your computer's firewall software that will block it. The firewall needs to allow the program's application file to access the Internet (for VV2 it usually Virtual Villagers - The Lost Children.exe).
