I have noticed in the stats area that it shows the number of crabs my little guys have caught. I have solved 11 puzzles and have not seen how the crab count has any relevance to anything. Is there a reason we need to know how many crabs have been consumed?

The number of giant crabs that your villagers catch is an indication of how skilled your farmers are and how robust your food production is. Only the best farmers can provide that kind of food for the village, and the crabs supply significantly more food than other sources do. You also get to see a cute little celebration when a crab is placed in the bin.
