Our forum community has decided that it would be nice to be able to see the age demographic of people playing Virtual Villagers. So, to assist with that request, here is a special user-requested poll! grin

How old are you?
Only one choice allowed

Of course, statistically, this info only pertains to the users who seek out the forums for one reason or another. There could be thousands of septugenarians playing who simply haven't accessed this poll.

I'm quite surprised, I would have thought my generation (being that we are generation www, if you know what I mean) would be playing a lot more. Then again most of my friends play games where you shoot stuff. Personally I like the feeling of playing god! Lol.

I'm just happy I'm in the most crowded age group too...lol

Hubby plays GTA:San Andreas on PS2(I can't stand the language, horrible role modeling, etc but it's stress relief for him) while I yell at my (right now) four groups of little villagers. There always seem to be more anonymous users browsing than registered ones...it would be interesting to know how they fall into the poll...hey browsers, register and vote, won't you? : )

I want more polls. For instance, which is better--Palm or computer? I play the Palm game more because it travels with me.

I'm one of so few in the teen (ish [19]) group. And I actually carry around my laptop with me, so it's just about as portable. (although hoping to get a new one soon, since this one's getting old, or rather full of games)

You're not too young! The group of us in our 30s is just happy other people our age are playing!

Hubby laughs at me with how I always have to "check on" my little villagers...he went to use the computer this morning and read some of the main strategy guide. When I went over to bring up the games, he reminded me not to let the berry bush get depleted without having tech points to get better food for them! (hee hee) Still can't get him to try a game...workin' on it.

31 and lovin' it...

I'm in the 4th most popular group - and glad to see others of my age playing. I thought I was the only one as most others seem to like the shoot-em-up ones or not to own a computer!! This is a great game and look forward to VV2 coming out.

OMG did I ever open a cam of worms when I asked for this poll. LOL I just wanted to see if I was the only soon to be geezer who played this. The last time I was a member of a game forum I was the oldest person on it but at least 10 years... and I was 36 at the time!!!!

This poll is fascinating. It's also interesting to see the locations of various posters.

I'm in the 50s group. Or, as we like to say around the house, the group where going to the doctor for any ailment means immediately hearing "well, as we grow older..." Doesn't matter what the illness is, that's the first thing you hear.

When I was playing EQ in my late 40s, there were many nights where I was grouping with a stellar group, with a terrific warrior "puller" who looked fierce, pulled fast and furiously, and role played as if he had conquered many worlds. After a few hours -- usually around 9 pm in their time zone -- the warrior would tell the group "aw, man, my mom says I have to get to bed...8th grade bites..."

In five years of playing that game, I never got used to the collision of the online persona/graphic and the reality on the other side of the screen. I'm guessing the poll here is pretty much accurate of these kinds of games.

Oh, I said all that to say that no one of any age should feel out of place. Heck, if I was one of the villagers, I would be elderly! Or more likely, one of my two skellies because I didn't put enough tech points in Medicine yet. (sigh)

(And if you don't know what kind of game EQ is, I just made absolutely no sense. Won't be the last time...)

I'm 30 (female) and I have started a game for my 11 year old son - its a bit too low-key for my 7 year old, though. I'm surprised an 11 yr old boy would play it, there's no violence...maybe he doesnt know that yet lol.

I voted for my own age range but my daughter (who's 5) is becoming much more obsessed than me. She's back at school and gets annoyed that she doesn't have enough time in the morning to check on her people and that she's having to pause it while asleep and at school. Wish I'd voted in her category now and was quite surprised to see that there was as many as there is in the 5-14 group, athough I'm sure there's more they just have't been on the forum!

You could add her as a user of this Forum, and have her vote under her ID. Don't if that would work for sure.

I love this game. I am in the 14% group, so I guess I'm a little old, but I sit for hours watching my little people. Checking on them is the first thing I do each morning. I check on them often during the day. Thank you LDW folks. This game is the best!!

Well, I'm in the 13% group. VV calls me "elderly" HA! I notice that the VV "elderly" can still have babies I have also learned that people in my age demographic are gamers more so than the younger groups. This is better than Bingo!

Tenaj,

I'm "elderly" according to VV as well! I'd like to bet the programmer who coded that part is still fairly young.

I'm in the 30-39 group. Wow, I didn't realize that the majority were older, I figured it would be the 20-29 group.

I noticed that the post originated last year, is it still accurate?

I was totally shocked to see that I wasn't considered to old to play these games.
I will be 54 and still play video games.
But evidently more people still play alot older than myself.

To the 13 and 14 year olds...you are in no way to young to play. My 8 year plays (with a little strategy help)and loves it. That's one great thing about VV is folks of all ages can enjoy it. Have fun!

I agree with SpazMcG7 and the god thing!! I don't prefer games with only one theme, like shooting everything in sight, or racing around in circles for the best time. This game is cool. I'm in the 2nd (by a nose) most popular age group. Maybe we just know how to have real fun. Or are looking forward to hearing those little sighs and grunts as a sign of companionship during those days when you're home alone. Which for me is quite often. I keep the screen off to keep me guessing but enjoy the sounds. Well, I like to do dishes the old fashion way. Almost dropped the cup I was washing when I realized that there was no longer any sound coming from the speakers. Ahhh... oh, "nevermind", the screen saver kicked on... time to up the minutes on that. Thankfully no major disaster came to hush my village.

My B-day was Tues, 8/7, and this put me further into my age group. I'll just say I already past the most popular age groups. Mind you this is my biological age and not my mental age.

How old am I? Hmmm... I am not sure. I do not think they had birth certificates when I was born. I used to do my homework by candlelight because Tommy hadn't invented electricity yet and when I wanted to call up my neighbor, I had to make a fire and send smoke signals. There was no indoor plumbing and I had to trap my own food.

As far as my mental age??? Lets just say "I know something you dont know"

No! I meant "appearance-conscious". In French it's the same word! We say that to want not to tell his age is a "coquetterie"

That's OK. I went to my online translator and tried to translate "coquettish" and it came up with nothing. So with my little knowledge of French I dropped the "ish" and added an "e" to make it a word that looked more French. When I translated it, it came back as "flirt". It made sense to me. Anyway, my wife tells me I am a big flirt. hee hee hee. \:\) "...Who? Me?..." LOL

I see! in french "une coquette" mean a girl who like to flirt with everybody. this is a a little old word The general meaning is more "appearance-conscious"! \:\)

That's what's known in English as a "false friend". You use a foreign word that looks similar to one in your own language, but discover it means something totally different.

For example, in Spanish, if you want to say "I'm embarrassed" and use "estoy embarazada" you'd be saying "I'm pregnant"!

Ahhh... I called myself a little girl, huh? LOLOL.... That was the hardest part of French and Spanish for me to learn was the masculine and feminine parts of speech.

Does this mean I have to run around in a little pink dress with sandals with the cute little buckle on the side?

Whoa... Now that is disturbing. \:\) and no, that's not my face but one most would be familliar with. LOLOL

I'll be 57 in a few days time and I was interested to see that the largest number of players falls into the three categories between 20 - 49, with the 50-59s running a close fourth.

Like the other posters in here, I thought that the majority of players would be much younger. It just goes to show that VVers are "young at heart" \:\) !

I have no problem telling my age. No one believes I'm 50. In fact, whenever I have to buy wine for Sabbath, I have to show my I.D.

Funny, I felt that teens wouldn't have been intersted. Proves how wrong I was. It's one of the great tings about this game; brings folks of all ages together. 8\)

I am in the 30-39 range but I have a son that plays all the LDW games (he loves them) and he is in the 5-14 group. I think there are a lot of kids in that age group that play but very little of this forum that post. I will not let my son post in forums like this even if he were interested.

I'm in the fifth place age group! I'm a fifteen-year-old lass who has way too much time on her hands after school.

Your poll of course will show only those who use your forum, not ALL players of the game. I wonder whether there may be a lot less forum interest in older players.
I for instance (almost 50) only investigated and registered for the forum because I had problems with the game and couldn't find answers in an FAQ page (issues remain unanswered -- I find this site difficult to use).

You can receive a lot of help on the forums. Simply go to the forum for the game you are playing (look in the Games Section), post your question, and a lot of people will be happy to help you. \:\)

Ah yes, and when I was 11, those of us with top scores in Math were offered an opportunity to learn to use a "computer." Once per week, three of us went to the "computer lab" where made punch tapes (initially in BASIC, later learning FOTRAN) and loaded them into a reader and dialed (and I do mean DIALED) some phone number and placed the clunky hand set in the recepticle and waited while the teletype slowly printed the result of our "programming" attempts. None of us believed a word when teachers told us that soon there would a computer in every home! Those teletypes relayed data to/from complexes that took up entire rooms, and sometimes small buildings. Who would want and who could afford to build an addition on their home to house a million-dollar smart-machine? And the school was charged some exhoribitant fee per SECOND of computer time for that relay connection. Aren't we glad things have come so far in the nearly 4 decades since!

I'm right there with ya Swedane--I'm 62. And I have a tattoo! A bunch of us middle-aged women from work went to a tattoo parlor 3 years ago, & got decorated. I love my little lizard who rests just above my wrist. (everyone else got roses & butterflies ) This is the time of your life to do whatever you've always wanted to do, but have been putting off. \:D

That's great Whimsey, welcome to the grown-ups club! Love the idea about your lizard tattoo. Funny you should say that this is the time to do whatever one previously put off. I did exactly that when I tuned 55. I took up motorcycling, ...and I just love it. My husband and I each have our own bike and have toured clear across this continent, the Yukon and Alaska. There's noting quite like it... So yes, a little gecko might just be the way to go!
Thanks for the tip. \:\)

I turn 37 in July - I was very surpised to see my group as the largest. It's comforting for my husband to know there are other significant others out there who play second fiddle to our little people sometimes.
My 12 year old son has a village too, although he isnt quite as addicted as I am. \:\)

Hi. Just a couple of things: I'm a retired teacher and I enjoy playing VV occasionally for relaxation. Of the two games, "Virtual Villagers" and "the Sims", I enjoy Virtual Villagers far, far more. The characters are MUCH CUTER and more likeable AND, although it's just a game, Virtual Villagers seems far more healthy and moral than The Sims...so, first of all, I wanted to let you know of my preference and how much I enjoy the game! Secondly, I was going to ask the developers of VV to produce a "sims-like" game with the villagers - keeping the unique Villager perspective. Then, in looking over you website, I think you've already done that! There's a game called "Villager Sim" which I suspect is just what I'm looking for, however, it looks to me like it's only available for Palm platforms and I want to use it on my laptop PC. Could you tell me if there is a version out for laptop PC and, if so, can I download it? I would love to know as I'd like to build a whole community for my little villagers including houses, stores, schools, churches, etc. Please let me know at my email address: patriciaszoo@charter.net. Thank you! :-) Pat

To me that is surprising...but VERY welcome news. THANKS for such a good poll. PEACE LOVE AND JOY... " YAWL "

nice poll!
isn't it amazing how people from age 5 to 80 and more get drawn to these games? shocked

I'm very curious though how the percentage is now, I think it differs from time to time.

So, if you are under 13, are you too young?

I am surprised there are so many children under 12 playing, I had no idea. If I was a parent I wouldn't want a young child to be playing I don't know why it just doesn't feel right. I have a 9 year old sister and her online usage is greatly monitored. She (thankfully) spends most of her time on extra curricular activities or having friends over which I think is important at that age.

Sorry, not trying to put anyone down, just sharing my thoughts. All kids are different too.

Well I'm almost 67 and I'm still playing all of the VV's and VF's. But my favorite is Plant Tycoon.

Actually. This poll reveals only the age group of those of us who take part in or visit the forums. And then not all who visit or take part may take part in the poll. (insert LOL here).
