Is there a way to predict the outcome when mutating plants or is it completely random?

It doesn't seem completely random, but it is certainly disappointing at times!

When you you mutat a flower and it turns into just a regular flower you can keep mutating it and it eventually will turn into a rare one. Though I have found out that it may take several.

Do either of you know if all plants eventually spawn new plants? IOW after planting the very rare seed, will it eventually produce a 2nd of itself?

Good question. I know Sunflowers can spawn new Sunflowers; that's tier 3. I have a decorative bunch of Roseacea Ferns in front of one peep's house and they spawned something brown last night. I will have to see what it turns out to be before I can say definitively that I have seen a tier 4 self-spawn.

It's not random. There's actually a map that someone posted on the VT Facebook group that shows how the mutation works. Each plant can turn into two different plants. I'll see if I can find it.

That's the mutating map for the flowers in VT, which posted by Anna Morosan in the VT Friends group.
Here is her message

Guys I don't know if you figured it out or not..but for those of you who didn't..here is a "map" of the flowers you can get by using the Mutation Liquid....for ex if u use it on no 1..you can get no 2 and no 15...if u use it on no 2..you can get no 1 and no 3..if u use it on no 19..you can get no 18 and 20..and so on (sorry for my drawing talent:))) ) no 21/22/23 I already donated it to the Museum smile smile ifade simgesi...Hope I am helpful;)

That is a terribly confusing 'map' this early in the morning, I'll have to look at it when I've been awake for a awhile longer. Has anyone posted a clearer map than that? While the pic is nice, I'd prefer a spreadsheet personally. cool

Thanks Hydra14. I completely forgot to post it!

VirtuallyMe, this is the explanation I posted on FB on how to interpret the map:
Click to reveal..

Basically, whichever plant you want to get, you have to mutate one of the plants next to it. So if you wanted to get plant #16, you would have to mutate either #15 or #17. Each plant can be mutated into 2 different plants. So if you had a Viola Cactus Ball (#17), the mutation liquid will turn it into either #16 or #18. You don't know which one you will get, but it will definitely be one of those two.

Also, #21 is the Tigerlily Willow Tree, #22 is the Roseceae Fern, and #23 is the Tahitian Ridged Cactus.

If you mutate, then choose an ordinary flower so you at least stand some chance of getting something rarer. I once mutated a rarer flower only to get a lemon maranta.

I was playing around with the plant mutation liquid and it made me wonder if there are rare plants that you cannot get by using the plant mutation on them. Like a plant that only exists because of two plants combining while being close together?

Or can they all be made by mutation?

They can all be made with the mutation liquid-I have four games going, and I used it to finish the plant collection in all four.

All plants can be made by mutation - you can tell from the map.

OK, thank you, just wanted to be sure. I wish my plants would self spawn (?) Seems like they don't do much without help. I even used the pollination liquid on five or six about a week ago and still nothing.

If you're trying to create more of a particular plant, plant them in a tight group and wait a few days. I have gardens with each of the rare plants in groups and I have twice as many of each kind now. The ones with spaces between them didn't do much of anything. Each house has a rare plant garden that's replicating steadily.

That's my technique with the ultra-rare plants, too. I'm not sure I would use the word "steadily", but I am building a stockpile slowly but surely.

I like your idea and will do that but what I thought was supposed to happen was that a 'new' plant would eventually grow between two 'different type' plants. Instead of having to always use the mutation liquid.

So, I was hoping that if I first used the liquid to get some new plants, then placed them in a checkerboard pattern that I would get even more new types. After about 3 days of nothing happening at all, I sprayed each with the pollination spray.

Been over a week since I did that and still absolutely nothing. frown

I used something on some of my plants a while back as an experiment (can't remember which item it was now) and all it did was make the plants larger & have sparkly dots on them. Is that an intended result?

It means they're more fertile now.

True. I should have said "technically it means they're more fertile." I never saw a difference either.

Finally had time to work on this. So the way I understand it is.. Results of mutating a plant can be predicted thusly:
Plant #1 (Mela Rare Oak) will mutate into #2 (Four Petal Maple) OR #15 (Red Berries Cactus). Mutating plant #2 (Four Petal Maple) results in either #1 (Mela Rare Oak) OR #3 Cactusbali Bamboo Tree, etc etc but what about plants #14 (Green Ivy Lotus) & #23 (Tahitian Ridged Cactus)? What do they mutate into?

Yes, that's correct.

As far as I know, the Green Ivy Lotus only mutates into the Goldenberries Caladium and the Tahitian Ridged Cactus only mutates into the Roseceae Fern. I've used the mutation liquid on those and have never gotten anything else. It may be possible that they mutate into each other, but I personally haven't seen it happen.

Been building a spreadsheet of Virtual Town plants & what they mutate into including images. I am currently missing #20 (White Orchid Pitcher Plant), #21 (Tiger Lily Willow Tree) & #22 (Rosacea Fern) Does anyone have images of those 3 plants they'd like to share? Below is what I have so far. Anyone have corrections?

smile That's great! If I end up with the Rosacea Fern somehow, I'll let you know.

I've been trying to get new ones strictly through natural plant mutation instead of using the stuff in the store. So far no luck with the really rare or Tier 4 plants but several Tier 3 plants.

I see you're using dropbox, which is a site that doesn't support hotlink.
You better use another site instead.
I use "directupload" because it supports hotlink and your image never gets deleted.

Thank you for the cactus image, archi. Your picture is better than mine, so I'll swap them out & it will be in my next post. In the mean time, here is my latest copy:

As a side note, if you continue to scroll down in the PDF you will find there are more pages. In all there are lists of plant mutations, my observations on what plants have spontaneously seeded themselves & next to what other plants, & insects & their habits/habitats.

Ooooh thanks for the PDF file.. now back to mutation.. favourite part of my game, mutation experiments.. I love my Botanical Garden I can spend allot of time there and different areas of my lawn...I just learned things I didn't know and now though I'm overwhelmed with one particular kind. I see I can mutate back to something other than just the orginal common.. thank you....

Hi VirtuallyMe! Is there any way you can re-post that PDF? When I click on the link it says:

Sorry, the time limit of this canvas has expired.

If not, I'll find some other way to get the information, even if I have to save and print the one on this site a few screens back.

I've been playing VT for some months now. My stats are this:
Current population: 10
Cap. Project comp: 5 (all)
Town features: 46
Trees: 175
Plants: 685
Mayors: 18
Steps: 823,268

Minerals: there are 4 groups of minerals in the museum. Going left to right, I have all but the last one in the 3rd group. If anyone knows the name of this mineral, I'd appreciate if you would post it.

Plants: there are 6 groups in the museum counting upper left to lower right. This may be misleading since the plant names are in different colors. Group 1 is white ( these are the seeds you buy in the general store). Group 2 the names are in blue, groups 3 and 4 are pink and groups 5 and 6 are green. I have no idea what the significance of the name color is. I have all the plants.

Bugs: there are 3 groups of bugs going left to right in the museum. I have all but the last one in the 2nd group and the last one in the 3rd group. Again, I would appreciate if someone would post the names of each of these 2 bugs.

Comments on breeding.
There are 5 original plants in the general store. Taking these plants 2x2, they should produce 10 different hybrids. Assuming the name color is a code, there is no group of 10 plants that have the same name color. What this tells me is that at least one of the "white" plants (plant withe a white name) is not a purebred plant, but a hybrid. They may all be hybrids for that matter. This makes predicting what the offspring of two different plants nearly impossible because of the limitation to 700 plants. What is more revealing is to cross two plants if the same variety and see what they produce. My experience with the Daisy Lemonbush is that it produces only itself, leading me to believe that it may be a purebred. Still working this train of thought.

Comments appreciated.

The bugs etc are in different places for each player. I think it's the order you catch them, in subsets.
You're probably missing the banana slug or worm.
See the thread I started with complete lists, and you can tell by the process of elimination.

How do you collect the seeds once you've pollinated them?

You can't collect seeds like you did in PT. Seeds can only be obtained from general store, citizens and cinema.
When you plant them together and water everyday, a hyrbird will spawn near them (Pollinating increases the chance).
