Has anyone had any luck getting a master gatherer minus the lava stones

Just take a villager and gather everthing you can find. A second circuit with the same villager is usually enough for them to be master.

Ok thanks I’ve been trying since the start of the game to get one, I’ve only been able to get one to about 70% I’ll try to reincarnate one of my older ones

A youngster can gather vines and some other things. You can start there. Then just try to gather everything you can, as aoh said. You'll need those things for later puzzles and trades and crafting anyway, so build up inventory. During a recent holiday event (which is now over), a player needed something like 50 or 80 units of sand to fully participate in the event. Some resources can't be gathered until you complete some of the puzzles, and a few are gathered as part of farming. All but one of the items on the first three pages of the crafting hut can be gathered. The exception is something found in the earthquake cracks.

I don't believe a villager gets gathering experience from gathering mushrooms or fireflies.

Trust me I start them as early as 2 when it comes to gathering and they never go over 70% reincarnated one and it seem to get just below master gatherer I’ll just keep trying and see

It can take awhile if you don't have learning speed totems etc.

If you decide to give each villager one necklace and get Double Speed on somebody, be happy - it speeds up how quickly that villager learns. Of course, Master Healer and Perfect Villager necklaces are nothing to cry about... unless it's tears of joy.
