[Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/26/09 10:44 AM

After working pretty hard on some mods, I decided to play around with my little people and perform a "little" test. I marked this as a spoiler in case anyone wants to figure it out for themselves!

Description
The only rainbow-haired child I have seen so far was in one of Lukerie's families as a (very lucky!) adopted child. The test will be based on the normal scheme of determining the child's hair which is using the image of the heads and counting how many heads are between the mother and father's and looking at the middle area of the two. I didn't want to count on mutations since that's not a solid method that you can try.

Since the rainbow hair is at the very end, I'd have to pair her up with the man next to her in the image file and produce a daughter.

Not the best of hairstyles in my opinion, but if he'll provide us with a little girl of rainbow hair, I'll gladly accept him!

The Test
At first I thought I'll sift through the adoptable people until I find one of the two hairstyles I need to work with..and I did find Mr. Spike first, but I decided continue looking for Miss Rainbow.

Finally, I find her and adopt her! Next is my search for Mr. Spike. What I did was clean up the house and wait until the first proposal e-mail arrived. As soon as the e-mail arrived, I do not open it. I pause, close the game and save my files as a backup in case the proposal isn't coming from Mr. Spike. smile I only had to reject 3 guys & use the backup files I created before Mr. Spike showed up!

So, after a little victory dance I made yet another backup of my files and then proceeded doing the same thing as I did with the proposals, but this time making children!

The first attempt I received an orphan event as soon as I reopened the game..I was curious so I accepted it and it was a cute little purple-haired girl. Unfortunately, she's not why I made this family so I went right to the baby-making LOL! Incidentally, she tried to interrupt them by jumping on the bed eek. First try, and they did not produce a baby.

I used my backups, then tried again. Once again I received an event and it was allergy season! I had to treat our colorful couple with some anti-histamines before they could even think about helping me with my test. All cleared up and..voila, a baby! *Waves bye bye to the poor orphan*

At this point, I'm chewing my nails. I'd assume that the baby should look exactly like the parents depending on the gender..unless there was a mutation!

Result

Finally! A rainbow haired kid who's not a result of mutation or adoption.

Can't wait to try what you did. Good job! smile

Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/26/09 03:22 PM

Only other thing I would think of trying is one parent from the end of the hair colors (not rainbow level but close to her) and another from way at the top. If the genetics are anything like the ones in VV2, that might be another way of getting the rainbow child. wink

Lyssaria, may I use this family tree pic? I'm going to make a pic based genetic tree guide for people.

Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/26/09 05:15 PM

Thanks guys smile This was a fun project for sure..I'm going to keep the Rainbow family and see how many rainbow heads I can pop out lol!

Nice theory Krystal! I would hope there's more solid ways to get her than to wait for Mr. Spike.

Sure thing Havoria, feel free to use it however you need! I look forward to seeing your guide. smile

I renamed little Trishella as Rainbow II once I saw her little 2 year old self running around today. She really is cute!

I also caught them brushing their hair at the same time, that hair must be quite the challenge to run a brush through smile

You are sooooooooooooooooooooo lucky!!!!!!!!
I've been trying this forever, but I didn't think of backup files! ( And, for that matter, I don't know how to make them.)

Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/27/09 05:34 AM

When doing this, there's no need to close the game. As long as you are in windowed mode and not in full-screen mode, anyway.

Pause the game, open the LDW folder, copy the family file to a new folder, unpause and try to make a baby (or whatever you're trying to do), pause the game again, switch to a different family, copy/paste the backup file back to the LDW folder, and switch back to your family.

Works just as well, and you don't have to sit through the loading.

Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/27/09 07:38 PM

Thanks Tuna Puzzler! I'll remember that. smile I didn't have too much of a problem with waiting for the game since I'd have this forum to play with as I wait, but this will certainly help me out!

Elisa725: I'm sure you'll be able to give it a shot too smile There's an informative post here that explains how to backup and recover your files!

I really do recommend backing up even if you don't want to try this out since it'll help you get your family back in case something goes wrong and they die off.

Yay, another little addition to the rainbow family smile

Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/28/09 05:09 AM

Maybe you should do the rainbow girl with another man see what happens or spike 2 with a lady and see what happens! My hero!

TunaPuzzler/ Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/28/09 05:13 AM

Either the rainbow girl, spiked hair guy, blue haired girl, and the Mohawk could produce any of these four if married to any other peep. It wouldn't be as likely though as it is if two of the four are paired together.
Posted by: serendipity8777

TunaPuzzler/ Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/28/09 12:49 PM

That's true Lewanda. I had 2 rainbow girls marry brown haired guys and all the kids were blondes and a mohawk guy and a blue haired girl marry other peeps and they never got any kid that looked like their parents. Would love to see a little blue haired girl running around. smile

Lyssaria, I tried doing your experiment but I got the wrong proposals everytime. Finally after rejecting dozens of proposals, I gave up. frown Even tried using the mohawk and the spike haired guys for new experiments but I never got lucky.
Posted by: Lyssaria

TunaPuzzler/ Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/28/09 07:27 PM

Yeah, it's all about luck unfortunately frown Thanks to Lewanda informing me, there's now 6 possible ways to get little miss rainbow hair.
  • Adoption event
  • Mutation
  • Spiked blue man + Rainbow woman
  • Mohawk + Multi-shade blue woman
  • Spiked blue man + Multi-shade blue woman
  • Mohawk + Rainbow woman

I know the proposals can be very discouraging, but don't give up! There's always another day you can give it a try if you have nothing better to do. smile

Yup, I'll try again after the exam I told you about. Meanwhile,
my rainbow girl is frozen in time. smile

FIRST BABY/ Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/28/09 09:59 PM

Sunny Rain and Mohawk just had their first baby. He wasn't as hard of a case as I thought he was going to be. I hope to get a rainbow baby next.

Oh, yay! A blue haired girl. laugh

Re: FIRST BABY/ Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/28/09 10:07 PM

If what I think about VF genetics is right they should produce the blue haired girl, mohawk guy, rainbow girl, and spike hair guy.

As I think about it, they'll also be able to have babies with the two heads above mohawk.

Re: FIRST BABY/ Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/28/09 10:41 PM

I love that little blue-haired girl! Congratulations on your little bundle Lewanda grin My rainbow family has another baby as well:

Re: FIRST BABY/ Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/28/09 10:51 PM

Ohhh, you have three rainbow babies. So cute! I hope your last one is a blue haired girl. It seems that would complete the genetics pattern. Unfortunate for mine will also be able to produce the two heads above them, so the babies won't all be the four last heads.
Posted by: Lyssaria

Re: FIRST BABY/ Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/28/09 10:56 PM

Haha yeah! I do hope I can get that little blue-haired girl too..otherwise I'll pick Rainbow II to start the new generation and find another Mr. Spike to continue the experiment LOL
Posted by: Lewanda

Re: FIRST BABY/ Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/28/09 11:05 PM

I hope you don't have to go through as many to find your next spike as I had to to find mohawk. smile I didn't think he was ever going to come along. I chose mohawk since you are experimenting with spike already. I'm already certain of the babies they can produce though. It will be the last six heads...unless I'm dead wrong about this, and I don't think I am. I have a family in all five slots with one being a 10th gen, so I'm pretty much certain about how VF genetics works from them.

Re: FIRST BABY/ Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/28/09 11:32 PM

Yeah, I definitely believe that you have the genetics down pat I just got bored that one night and figured I could show the evidence behind it! I'm still crossing my fingers for the last baby but it'll at least another 6 hours before I can try again. >_<

Do you think I should use my backups method when my peeps are ready to produce the last baby?

Right! Without your backups method mine rainbow girl wouldn't have lived long enough to meet mr. mohawk. smile

Re: FIRST BABY/ Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/29/09 12:31 AM

I was doing an office overhaul in responce to a request, and mine crashed on me making me loose it all. That's so disheartening! I usually save my work as I go, but unfortunately for me, I hadn't this time.

Re: FIRST BABY/ Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/29/09 12:43 AM

My my my! How long did it take you to get Rainbow-Haired Girl paired up with Spike?!
Posted by: Lyssaria

Re: FIRST BABY/ Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/29/09 12:45 AM

It only took me 3 tries which would be about 5 minutes or so, I really lucked out! It can take a very long time.
Posted by: Lewanda

Re: FIRST BABY/ Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/29/09 12:48 AM

You sure did luck out Lyssaria. It took me forever to get my rainbow girls mohawk guy. By the way, I gave your rainbow girl-spike genetics experiment five stars.

Lyssaria... I posted this on the marriage proposals post, but I'm just gonna keep posting here instead of going back and forth... How do you save and use backup files?

Re: FIRST BABY/ Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/29/09 01:04 AM

So, did you have to use the backup file to get them, or did you just get extremely lucky and get it on your third try? Or your third time using the backup?
Posted by: Lyssaria

Re: FIRST BABY/ Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 06/29/09 01:05 AM

Third time using the backup, I definitely didn't anticipate only needing to go through 3 proposals..it's best to be safe smile

I have counted how many times I am clicking Try Again, and I am up to 400 and I have yet to come across the blue stripey girl, the rainbow girl, the mohawk guy, and the spikey guy YET. GRRR.

UPDATE: 472 tries, and I got the spikey-haired guy... This better work!!!

Ugh, I tried this on one of my families because I can not get them to have any babies...but I'm doing something wrong...shocking, I know laugh ...whenever I copy back it says it's too soon to try still...any suggestions?

Re: [Spoiler?] Genetic Rainbow-Haired Child - 07/21/09 07:23 PM

Make sure that the backup you saved was not overwritten by accident and that you have the right files backed up (if you're trying to make a baby in game slot 1, you need the files that have the number 1).. copy the backup files you made, and keep your actual LDW Virtual Families save files folder open for convenience.

Unpause the game and try for a baby, if it did not work out, pause the game again and switch out to another family. Keep this other family open, paste the backup files to replace the ones found in the save file folder and return to your other family.

Rinse and repeat from the unpause part, make sure you never overwrite your backups after you already tried for a baby smile Let me know if it still doesn't work for you Beth!

I'd give you a rainbow gal if I could, Kikiann11! I'm focusing on one of my families.I started one with a spikey haired dude and he married the girl about three heads away from miss rainbow. On the first try, they got a bald dude ( i think he's adorable.) the second They got Mr. Mohawk!! I'm so happy! The other family is my rainbow girl whom is still waiting for Mr. Spike or Mr. Mohawk frown . My Mr. Spike got three emails from a girl named Jo who said she didn't like his hair and was moving out of town because of him. Her's my little family!

Actually you can use bald and bun for it. So there are many ways to get the rarest of all as kids.
Adoption
Mutation
and the rare peeps paired via marriage (including) Bald and Light Blonde Bun
