Need help with mutation liquid

i need hints on how to use the mutation liguid. i use to have a list (spoilers of making new plants and would like to have some help again.

The Mutation Guide by sfrose in the Plant Tycoon Guides should give you a lot of help.

From the Borg's Grids (that is in Plant Tycoon Guide) I have done this empty grid who shows the foliages and flowers in the same grid. You may choose one flower or one foliage and the plants that will come with mutation will be the one just before or the one just after
The second grid is the pictures of all the foliages and flowers.

Edit: I'm not sure to be very clear, so this is an example:
You want to mutate a Mystic Fern.
It will give you one of these plants:
(in dark blue) a Bluestar Fern or a Rosaceae Fern
Or (in dark brown) a Mystic Gladiatus or a Mystic Ananas

Now, that chart is the first one I've ever been able to understand.

But I have one question.

I haven't tried the mutation liquid yet, because I don't know when to use it. Is it used on the newly planted seeds, or when the plants first come up, or on mature plants.
