Pets in VF2

I'm not sure if anyone asked about it before (if so the topic can be deleted and please show me or move the post) but, what are the pets in the VF2 are used for? Can they do something? Or can I command them to do something?

I only know that they eat when I fill their bins, I can drag and place them somewhere and they can be petted by the people living there.

That's about it.
