Why is it that some people's gongs have interesting things happening(grant vision, life...) but mine can only grant/take food, technology, wisdom, youth, or health?

It granted luck (island events)recently. The first time, the event took most of the food 
so I forced ALL my villagers to fish. The second time, 8 villagers left the island on a raft and wanted to explore new lands... (Does something sound familiar?
