Yeah, I got a little sad when my first villager died as well. She was getting a little advanced in years and I was in the process of moving to a new place. I forgot to slow the game down and took more time moving things than I thought. By the time I got back home it was too late. I remember her too. Her name was Gzifa, she had red hair and wore a purple dress. She was only 56 because I hadn't researched all the techs yet. I said out loud (to no one in particular) Poor Gzifa, you worked so hard! Unfortunately her first daughter was lazy and I couldn't wait until she died :P
I always feel like when the first generation of my new game dies its like turning over a new leaf... I also usually do something special for all the villagers who were the first, make the others put flowers on their graves.

I do that, too.
Also, I think that when a villager dies and a new one is born with the same name, that's because the villagers believe in reincarnation and the dead person has come back to life. When someone is born with the same name as someone still living, I stick the morpheme "-aru" after their name which means "named after" or "named in honor of" in my personal language and sounds sufficiently Isolish.
Since when is 56 elderly!!! Guess I just gave too much away. I have only recently discovered these games after I retired. Am having a great time. VV is my first in this kind of genre. Love it. Somewhere I have packed the first SIMS.
