Display problems and/or Error code=0xc8660160 or 0xc8660110 - 05/10/06 11:21 AM

The complete error usually takes the form of one or more of the following:
  • Failed initializing DirectDraw. Only 16-bit and 32-bit displays are supported in windowed mode.
  • Could not open display. Error code=0xc8660160 or 0xc8660110.
  • Access violation at 0x0046E841 (tried to read from 0x00000004). Program terminated.
This post provides all of the currently known causes and solutions for the above issues when trying to run any of our Windows games. If you are experiencing the error code above, the game won't run at all, or any issues with how the game is displayed, please take the following steps before contacting LDW support via the Support Form.

Note: If the game had been running properly, and you changed modes from full-screen to windowed (or vice versa), you can force the game back to the working mode by performing the following procedure. If you're playing Fish Tycoon for Windows, this procedure will not work, since no configuration file exists for that game. Reinstalling Fish Tycoon will restore the original settings, however.

Look in the folder where the game is installed (it's usually found in Program Files on your hard drive). In that folder you should see a file called either ldw.ini or ldw with a file type of Configuration Settings (the icon will look like a notepad with a gear on it), depending upon how you have your folder options set in Windows. If you double-click on that file, you should see the file opened in Notepad and displaying several settings.

To force the game back to full-screen mode, you should change the settings in that file so that they look like this:

[ldw]
Fullscreen=1
ForceFullscreen=1
ForceWindowed=0
UseVsync=0

To force the game to run in windowed mode, you should change the settings in that file so that they look like this:

[ldw]
Fullscreen=0
ForceFullscreen=0
ForceWindowed=1
UseVsync=0

Then select File=>Save and the new settings will be saved. Try running the game again and see if it displays correctly.

If that doesn't restore the game to proper operation, or you'd like to determine if your computer's graphics settings are appropriate for our games, you should go through the following procedures:

First, make sure that hardware acceleration is set correctly. If your hardware acceleration is set too low, you will disable required graphic functions (DirectDraw Acceleration). To check your setting, follow this procedure:

  • Right click on the Windows desktop (make sure you're not on an application icon)
  • Select "Properties" from the popup menu (at the bottom)
  • Click the "Settings" tab at the far right of the Display Properties window
  • Click on "Advanced"
  • Click on "Troubleshoot"
  • Make sure that the hardware acceleration cursor is set to full.
  • If you have additional tabs for your graphics card's settings (such as OpenGL or Direct3D), check those tabs to make sure that Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering are set to "Application Preference" or "Let the application decide"
Thanks to our community for providing helpful information about this error.

Your display adapter must support DirectDraw Acceleration (not just DirectDraw) and it's advisable to have the latest version of DirectX to run this game. Not all computers come with graphics cards that support the graphics functions being used by Virtual Villagers and Fish Tycoon for Windows (and many other games). To check that you have the proper graphic support and to verify that your adapter is set and operating properly, follow this procedure:
  • Click on the Start Menu, and select "Run"
  • Type "dxdiag" in the Run window and click OK (or press Enter)
  • Check near the bottom of the window on that first screen (the System tab) to make sure that you have the required version of DirectX. The current version at this time is 9.0c, and can be obtained easily by using the Windows Update function
  • Next, select the Display tab in the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window that opens.
  • Check that the function "DirectDraw Acceleration" is enabled ("Direct3D" and "APG" are not required for Virtual Villagers or Fish Tycoon, but they may also be supported by your system). Also check the "Notes" window near the bottom of that window to make sure that it says "No problems found." You may also, if desired, test DirectDraw using the button provided on that screen.
  • While you're on that screen, check your display adapter's driver date. If it's very old, you should probably consider updating your driver. Most manufacturers supply driver updates through their support structure
  • Restart your computer, if instructed to do so.
Your display adapter must support those functions, and they must be enabled, for the games to work on your computer.

Finally, check that your computer's color bit depth is set appropriately. Depending on the size of your display adapter's Video Memory (VRAM), setting a high screen resolution can lower the color bit depth to a setting that isn't compatible with Fish Tycoon or Virtual Villagers. You can check your display settings on the "Display" tab of dxdiag (see the above procedure, and look for "Current Display Mode:"). Your color bit depth should be the highest supported by your computer. If in doubt, you should follow this procedure
  • Close open applications (you may have to restart your computer at the end of this procedure) so that you can see your Windows desktop
  • Right click on the Windows desktop (make sure you're not on an application icon)
  • Select "Properties" from the popup menu (at the bottom)
  • Click the "Settings" tab at the far right of the Display Properties window
  • Look at the "Colors" setting in the lower left portion of the window
  • You should set it to the highest setting supported on your computer.
  • Click "Apply"
  • If asked to restart your computer, Click OK
  • Try running the game again
If it still won't run, try lowering your display resolution and set the highest color bit depth again. You can again verify the settings in dxdiag.

Some applications (particularly kid's games) can only run in 256-color mode, and they can (and do) change the color bit depth to 256 colors. So even if you don't normally run your PC in that mode, make sure that it hasn't been left in that state by another application.

Since you purchased the game from Yahoo, you'll need to contact their customer support to see what they can do for you. Each site that sells Fish Tycoon handles their own sales and support. Sorry that we can't do more, but that's how things work.

I have checked all that you have posted as solutions and yet I get no results instead of the error code my virtual villagers just doesn't open any more, this happened once I had accidently switched from full screen mode to windowed mode, I was wondering if there was any way to switch back while not in the game?

Re: Error code=0xc8660160 in Fish Tycoon (Windows) - 08/23/06 07:46 PM

I helped another person with a similar problem this past week. I suggested that she temporarily change her display resolution to 1024x768 and make sure that her color was set to 16 or 32 bits. After that, she was able to launch her game. She then was able to set the game back to full screen mode and restore her display resolution settings, and all was well after that.

Ok, I still had the same problem after trying all the things above, then I tried the following and it helped (both VV+FT+another game from reflexive not starting):

- Desktop -> Right click -> Properties -> Advanced
- Here I have an additional tab starting the control panel of my grafic card (you can of course start it from tray/start menu - wherever you have it)
- I set both Anti-Aliasing and Anisotrope Filtering to "Application decides" (should sound like that in english)

Did you update your computer's display driver? That sometimes causes the error.

Sometimes updating causes error

I have Geforce FX-5200 and installed driver verison 93.71. It has some additional options in its dialog box, but you may never choose "default", you must select one of the games in the drop-down list (additional properties dialog box).

When I get that error, I uninstalled 93.71 and reinstalled 71.84, because it has less options to choose (so less trouble ).

Those having NVidia cards, try downgrading the driver

If all the above fails...

On an older computer I was getting this error message and couldn't update the driver. However, I found that if I edited the ldw.ini file that came with VV1 to the following, the game would start in Windows mode and I would be able to play the game:

Code:
[ldw]
Fullscreen=0
ForceFullscreen=0
ForceWindowed=1
UseVsync=0

I hope that this helps someone who also has the same problem.

Re: Display problems and/or Error code=0xc8660160 - 05/16/07 09:11 PM

So I've combed my computer far and wide and can't find that INI file.

Iver searched for everything that has ldw and *.ini.

Any suggestions? I'm on Win2K

Re: Display problems and/or Error code=0xc8660160 - 05/16/07 10:12 PM

It may differ because of where you got your game, and how it installed, but on my computer it is in the following folders:

C:\Program Files\Virtual Villagers
C:\Program Files\Virtual Villagers - The Lost Children

(the first is VV1)

You may need to make sure that hidden files are visible.

P.S. I didn't have the same problem with Fish Tycoon, only the VV games.

Actually, I bought it here! I tried getting it from GameHouse, but it would't install correctly, claiming a memory problem (incorrect, i can assure you!)

It would help to know what game you're playing, since each of our games operates somewhat differently. \:\)

Re: Error code=0xc8660160 in Fish Tycoon (Windows) - 07/26/08 05:20 AM

VV1 = I've had the game for about 2 weeks now and it's been playing just fine. Then today, I go this error message. I did the fix to play it in windowed mode and it works again, but I can't get it to play in full screen anymore (they way I've always played it). Am I stuck with windowed play from now on?

Re: Error code=0xc8660160 in Fish Tycoon (Windows) - 07/26/08 01:25 PM

If your computer has been able to run the game in full-screen mode before, then it should be able to again, as long as you haven't made changes to your computer that caused the problem. Such things as updating drivers, installing new hardware or software, or altering settings on your computer can affect a program's ability to operate properly.

Have you gone through all of the troubleshooting procedures in the first post in this thread to make sure that all of your computer's settings are set properly? If they are set correctly and you want to try full-screen mode again, you will need to change the configuration file so that it no longer forces windowed mode.

Re: Error code=0xc8660160 in Fish Tycoon (Windows) - 11/23/08 05:56 PM

Hi,
A couple of days ago I somehow managed to pillarbox my entire screen (I think I pressed ctrl and arrow or something) but when I eventually got it back to normal, my VV3 has decided to stop working and is giving me this error code.
I've been through the first post and tried to change the file - it won't let me save it :S
I have right clicked everywhere but I have yet to find 'properties - settings - advanced'!
Any help would be appreciated!
Kiss
ETA - It was running fine before, just so you know.

Re: Error code=0xc8660160 in Fish Tycoon (Windows) - 11/23/08 06:53 PM

You should be able to save the configuration file. Did you open it in Notepad? In order to access the display properties, you must right-click on an empty area of your Windows desktop. Doing so will open a popup menu with Properties at the bottom of the list.

Re: Error code=0xc8660160 in Fish Tycoon (Windows) - 11/23/08 07:36 PM

Yep.

It says "Can not create the file. Make sure path and file name are correct" :S

Re: Error code=0xc8660160 in Fish Tycoon (Windows) - 11/23/08 09:06 PM

It shouldn't be trying to 'create' the file. Have you tried "Save as" and specifying the correct folder in My Documents?

Re: Error code=0xc8660160 in Fish Tycoon (Windows) - 11/23/08 09:29 PM

No, I just went through and checked an it's trying to save in the right place, I don't understand why it's trying to create a file either?!

Do you think uninstalling and reinstalling might help?
Posted by: LadyCFIIAdministrator

Re: Error code=0xc8660160 in Fish Tycoon (Windows) - 11/23/08 11:31 PM

It's possible that could help. You might want to make sure you back up your savegame files first, to be safe. You can see the procedure here. (Those are the procedures for VV3, which is what you said you're playing, even though this is a Fish Tycoon thread). smile

Re: Error code=0xc8660160 in Fish Tycoon (Windows) - 11/24/08 11:53 PM

Reinstalling worked great smile Unfortunatly I'd left my tribe on 2x speed and they were all dead by the time I got everything sorted again frown But I'm starting afresh!

Re: Error code=0xc8660160 in Fish Tycoon (Windows) - 11/25/08 02:45 AM

We usually suggest a reinstall only as a last resort, but it will usually restore all game settings to the default and allow the game to run again. I'm glad you got the game working, although I'm sorry it took so long that your tribe died. frown

Re: Error code=0xc8660160 in Fish Tycoon (Windows) - 12/28/10 11:55 PM

I did all of this and there are no problems with my computer.
I did not ever change from windowed mode to fullscreen, so I don't know what the problem is.
I still get this error.

Re: Display problems and/or Error code=0xc8660160 or 0xc8660110 - 05/12/20 07:57 PM

So I did the ldw step because that sounds like my problem exactly, but when I go to save the file it says I don't have permission to open this file, and tells me to see the owner of the file and obtain permission. Help!
